Pittsburgh at San Diego
When: 10:10 PM ET, Friday, July 28, 2017
Where: Petco Park, San Diego, California

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to monitor the trade market for outfield help, but in the meantime, they’ve decided to reach into their minor-league system for an immediate spark. The Pirates have lost four of five following a six-game winning streak and are expected to promote outfield prospect Jordan Luplow from Triple-A Indianapolis prior to Friday’s series opener against the host San Diego Padres.

With Gregory Polanco sidelined due to a strained left hamstring, the Pirates have had mixed results from the trio of John Jaso, Adam Frazier and Jose Osuna, prompting them to make the call for the 23-year-old Luplow. A former teammate of New York Yankees star Aaron Judge at Fresno State, Luplow could see regular playing time after batting .296 with 21 home runs and 50 RBIs in 94 games this season between Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona. Pittsburgh, which is 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and 7 1/2 out of the second NL wild-card spot, needs to be careful not to overlook a Padres team that is 30-27 over its last 57 contests. Leadoff hitter Manuel Margot came within a triple of the cycle and rookie Dusty Coleman belted his first career homer in Thursday’s 7-5 win over the New York Mets.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (3-7, 4.92 ERA) vs. Padres LH Travis Wood (1-3, 6.91)

Kuhl avoided the home-run ball for the fourth straight start but allowed four runs and nine hits over six innings in Saturday’s 7-3 loss to Colorado. The Delaware native has gone 2-3 with a 3.96 ERA in 10 road outings this season while posting a 1-4 record and 6.04 ERA in 10 turns at home. Kuhl won his only previous start against San Diego, allowing two runs over six frames on Aug. 9, 2016.

Wood is making his first start for the Padres since being acquired from Kansas City in a six-player trade on Monday. San Diego is hoping the change in scenery provides a boost for the 30-year-old, who posted a 1.64 ERA over eight relief appearances in June before allowing 12 runs in 13 innings over three starts this month. Starling Marte is 9-for-28 with three homers against Wood, who is 6-8 with a 4.10 ERA in 30 career games (15 starts) versus Pittsburgh.

1. The Pirates have won 11 straight games when scoring at least four runs.

2. The Padres' bullpen has recorded a 2.08 ERA over 30 1/3 innings in the last eight contests.

3. Pittsburgh optioned LHP Steven Brault to Indianapolis to make room for Luplow.

PREDICTION: Pirates 6, Padres 5
